Course Description:
The functional purpose of a sanitary sewer system is to safely convey wastewater to its destination. Wastewater can consist of both sanitary sewage and storm drainage. Sometimes building roof drains are connected to the sanitary system (although this should not be the case. Standard sanitary sewer design is often viewed as a simple task to be relegated to the least experienced engineers or designers, but factors include varied land use, topography, materials, structural/geotechnical concerns and hydraulics make this a task that should at least be completed under the careful watch of an experienced engineer.
This course will describe the process necessary to design a functional gravity sanitary sewer system. It will cover calculation of design flows, pipe size and slope, sewer main location, manholes and pipe materials, the differences in pipe materials, bedding and backfill requirements, and testing.
Course Outline:
• Design Flows
• Impacts of Inflow and Infiltration on Design Flows
• Manholes
• Sewer Main Location, Depth and Alignment
• Separation from other utilities
• Pipe Size and Slope
• Pipe Materials
• Bedding and Backfill
• Depth of Cover
• Leakage Testing
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the user will:
• Understand the basics of calculating the design flow for a sanitary sewer system
• Understand the function of manholes and components of a manhole
• Understand how to select an appropriate location, both horizontally and vertically, for the sewer main
• Understand how to select appropriate pipe materials for a sanitary sewer.
• Understand the impacts of bedding, backfill and testing for a sanitary sewer.
Intended Audience:
This course is intended as an introduction to design of sanitary sewers therefore the intended audience includes all engineers designing or specifying sanitary sewer systems. It also includes those engineers and managers responsible for reviewing sanitary sewer projects or establishing local standards for sanitary sewers.
Course Summary:
This course will provide the user with a basic understanding of how to design a sanitary sewer system. It will cover the calculation of design flows. The course will cover how to select the appropriate location for a sanitary sewer and the function of manholes. It will also cover the variety of pipe materials that can be used for sanitary sewers. Main installation parameters including bedding, backfill, minimum and maximum cover and testing of the completed pipe will also be covered.
