Course Introduction
Access management is the practice of managing the location, number and spacing of connections, median openings and traffic signals on the highway system. Research has shown that access management can lead to a significant increase in safety and capacity. Access management is the control and regulation of the spacing and design of:
• Driveways/Intersections
• Medians
• Median Openings
• Traffic Signals
• Interchanges
Course Outline
This course will provide a history, development and purpose of access management. It will define the terms used in access management. The Access Management Classification System will be discussed. Driveway connections will be covered including conforming and non-conforming connections. The number of conflict points as it relates to the type of median opening will be outlined. Signal spacing requirements will be addressed. Driveway design including geometrics, placement and throat length will be discussed.
This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end, which is designed to enhance the understanding of the course materials.
